This past weekend was one of the warmest days we had experienced in the month of August here in Northern California. The weather forecast for the next few days advised that the weather will be no different. This just happened to remind me about my visit to Napa last year, I noticed a good amount of ice cream shops just in the downtown area alone. During my trip to Napa, the sun was up and the days were warm which compelled me to visit some of these ice cream shops.
When I visit an ice cream shops, I always look for two of the most famous of ice cream flavors in America – your traditional vanilla and of course, chocolate for the indulgent. I measure ice cream shops by how they create these two flavors. I figured if they can make the most basic flavors very well, they can make any flavor really good. Here are some of the ice cream shops I visited and my thought on their ice cream.
Anette’s Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop – I visited the one located on First Street, the location at Oxbow Market does not serve ice cream. This shop primarily sells handmade chocolates however the First Street location also serves ice cream. They have Dutch Chocolate and Indonesian Vanilla in their selection however, I was tempted to try something else I have never seen before – White Chocolate Cabernet Truffle Swirl. It is no surprise that they would add cabernet into their ice cream. This is in Napa after all. The other flavor I ordered is their version of Cookies and Cream (another one of my personal favorites). If they can make these two flavors well, and they do, the Indonesian Vanilla and Dutch Chocolate will not disappoint. They have other flavors in their selection however there are others you might enjoy such as Italian Cherry, Spanish Cappuccino and Mango Sorbet. There ice cream is not sold online but their chocolates are available for purchase at http://www.anettes.com/.
Yo Belle Frozen Yogurt – located at First Street and Main Street, they offer soft served ice cream by weight and your choice of toppings. They offer both French Vanilla and Double Chocolate which are really good and rich which explains why families seem to flock this place when visiting downtown Napa. They have another location at Bel Aire Plaza in Napa. Unfortunately, I cannot find their official website.
Three Twins Ice Cream – I found this gem of an ice cream shop inside Oxbow Market. Here, I lusted over their Madagascar Vanilla and Brownie Batter Chuck flavors. How can you go wrong with these two flavors? The latter was particularly decedent that you would want to order a bigger cup. It was the first I devoured and I’m not ashamed of it.
They have seven locations in the San Francisco Bay Area including one at the San Francisco Airport at Terminal 1. You can buy their ice cream online at http://threetwinsicecream.com/.
Frati Gelato @ The Riverfront – When I went to this location, there were families lined up to order. I soon discovered why. One of the specialties of this shop is their Chocolate Lavender ice cream. This was a bit tart for my taste however they have other flavors available.
The flavor listing on their website is often different from what they offer on the shop. They don’t offer every flavors listed on their website at the shop. They seem to rotate the flavors on a regular basis. During my visit, I ordered the Chocolate Lavender but I also so flavors such as Lemon Curd and their signature flavor called Frate which is ice cream made of sweet milk. You can visit their website at http://fratigelatocafe.com/ .
The end of May marks the beginning of the summer for most Americans. This often means summer vacations, going to the beach, backyard barbeques, pool parties with great summer treats such as ice cream. It’s time to go out and enjoy the sunshine.
