Austin is a very diverse and cultured capital city most visitors might not think of. Aside from being the capital city of the state of Texas, there are actually a number of interesting and fun things a visitor can do in Austin. Here are just a few that might peak your interest when visiting the Lone Star capital:
Eat as much barbeque as you can – Texas is known for both their cattle and their barbeque. Texas produces some of the best barbeque in the country and Austin is no exception. There are a number of barbeque restaurants you can choose from in Austin alone. The most popular one is called Franklin’s but there are other popular ones such as Salt Lick and Stubb’s.
See a live concert – Austin would not be called the live music capital of the world if it isn’t true. The most famous venue in Austin is called – ACL or Austin City Limits. But there are a good number of venues to choose from clubs, open are setting such as Guero’s Oak Garden depending on the music you fancy.
Take a hike – Downtown Austin alone has about two hiking trails not far from the Colorado River which is very popular among the locals. Some of these trails offer great views of the hidden sights of the city. These hiking trails are also used by locals for jogging and bicycling. One leads towards Barton Spring Pool.
Take up a water sport – Paddling, kayaking, rowing even river cruising are very popular water activities in Austin. Most of these companies have docked on the Colorado River not far from downtown. Kayaks and Paddles can be rented by the hour and there are several companies that offer them. There are also river cruise companies in Austin cruising along the Colorado giving visitors a different perspective of the city.
Watch the bats – The famous bridge where you will find bats fly out from is South Congress Bridge. These bats are referred to as Statesman Bats. The bats would only come out at dusk and only flies around the area for a very short time. Everyday there are people standing at the bridge’s sidewalk and at the Statesman Bat Observation Center below the bridge waiting to see the bats makes an appearance for the evening.
Shop for Cowboy boots – You’re not a true cowboy without authentic cowboy boots. Allen’s Boots in Austin is one of the best places to hunt for one of a kind, handmade pair of cowboy boots. There are hundreds of cowboy boots, buckles and outfits here to choose from at Allen’s. They also sell handmade leather accessories. But be warned, they can get pricey but you’ll be glad to know that you will never find their boots anywhere else.
Take a dip at the pool – at Barton Springs Pool. Austinians don’t stay indoors during hot and humid days. Some would visit Barton Springs Pool taking a dip at the waters to cool down or relax on the lawn. There is a park next to Barton Springs where the kids can play and families can picnic. There are lifeguards on duty at the pool, a small fee to get in from one of the hiking trails.
Feel the creeps of ghosts – there are several haunted places in Austin some you won’t expect. The best way to learn about them and visit them is the book a ghost tour. There are tour companies in Austin who could give you the creepy, scary, ghostly stories and experience you crave.
